How to be a good wingman online (when nobody goes to bars anymore)
Being a wingman used to mean buying the second drink. Now the bar is your friend's Instagram story and the second drink is a link. Here's how to do it without making everyone uncomfortable.
Rule 1: vouch in public, intro in private
The most effective online wingman posts something that vouches for their friend — a photo, a quote, "this human is single and the world is unwell about it" — and lets interested people self-select. Then takes the conversation private. Cold DMs from you to a stranger saying "you should date my friend" almost never land. Public vouch, private intro is the order.
Rule 2: write the bio they wouldn't
Your friend will undersell themselves. You won't. That's the whole advantage. You can say "she's the funniest person at any table" in a way she literally cannot. Use it. Be specific — "rebuilds her own bike" beats "outdoorsy" every time.
Rule 3: make it shareable, not searchable
A screenshot in your story dies in 24 hours. A doc requires friends to forward it. A page with a link can be re-shared infinitely with one tap and looks great when pasted in iMessage or WhatsApp. This is exactly what a Flirtl page does — auto-generated share previews, real OG images, structured inbox for intros.
Rule 4: don't be the middleman forever
The worst wingmanning is the kind where everything goes through you. "She says hi" "He says hi back" — exhausting. Your job is to create the opening, then exit. Hand off the inbox, exit the chat.
Rule 5: get the consent first
Always ask before you post your friend. Show them the draft. Let them edit. The page is theirs; you're just holding the pen. On Flirtl this is built in — they can take it down with one tap, and so can you.
A scripts template
For asking permission:
"Random idea — can I make you a Date My Friend page? Takes 60 seconds, I write it, you approve before I post anything, you can delete it whenever."
For the story caption:
"Putting [friend] on the market officially. If you know someone cool and emotionally regulated, the inbox is open. [link]"
